II Latin American Colloquium on Political Ecology and Alternatives to Development
The II Latin American Colloquium on Political Ecology and Alternatives to Development was held on September 26 and 27, 2023 at the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar, in Quito, Ecuador.
During two days, researchers, students, graduates and activists from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Bolivia shared work, experiences and reflections on territorial conflicts from the perspective of Latin American Political Ecology.
The meeting proposed to analyze disputes over water, coastal territories, the expansion of agri-food capitalism, mining, landfills, energy transitions, climate policies and educational, community and organizational experiences that emerge from the territories. At the same time, it opened a space to think about the alternatives that emerge from collective processes and that invite to reflect on the role of education, research, memory, organization and care in the defense of life.
The colloquium tables addressed topics such as water distribution and power relations; agri-food capitalism and other possible agricultures; coastal territories in dispute; territorial conflicts from Latin American case studies; education, memory and research as tools for territorial defense; and disputes against global warming from below.
This second colloquium consolidated a regional space for exchange between situated research and territorial experiences, strengthening a Latin American network of critical thinking, emancipatory pedagogies and alternatives to development.
