Agroecology as an alternative to capitalist modernity

Apr 02, 2026

Episode notes

DESCRIPTION AND WHO PARTICIPATED

This research analyzes the role of agroecology in the construction of alternative ways of life to the capitalist development model in rural Cusco-Peru, based on the study of three local experiences.

Its main contribution lies in showing that agroecology transcends the technical dimension of agricultural production, being configured as an integral approach that articulates ecological, social, cultural and economic aspects. In this sense, it not only proposes sustainable ways of producing food, but also promotes transformations in social relations, in community organization and in the way people relate to the territory.

The research also demonstrates that agroecological practices contribute to strengthening peasant communities by improving food security, boosting local economies and recovering ancestral knowledge that has been historically displaced by the conventional agricultural model. A relevant finding is the leading role of women, who emerge as key actors in the implementation and sustainability of these initiatives, favoring empowerment and equity processes within the communities.

Similarly, the study establishes a relationship between agroecology and the construction of life horizons based on principles such as cooperation, autonomy and respect for nature, in line with perspectives such as Buen Vivir. However, it also identifies important limitations, such as the persistence of the dominant agricultural model, the difficulties in accessing markets and the weak political articulation of the experiences analyzed.

Overall, the research concludes that agroecology has a significant potential to promote structural transformations in the rural world; however, its consolidation as an alternative requires the strengthening of networks, public policies and organizational processes that expand its scope and sustainability.
